We, however, must step up to the plate if we are to help these organizations. Adoption events, fundraising, educational programs, and other forms of assistance are just a few of the ways these organizations assist animals in need. These animals are saved from euthanasia in the end because they are actively sought after in search of homes. Nonetheless, animal welfare groups are attempting to assist those in need. The stress, confusion, and sadness of a shelter stay can be incredible. It is unfortunate that animals suffer the most. irresponsible pet owners are responsible for this heartbreaking situation because they fail to neuter or spayed their animals and abandon them when they are unable to care for them. The reality is that shelters are overcrowded on a daily basis, and animals are frequently euthanized simply because they are in need. Over the past decade, the number of animals that have been euthanized has decreased from 2.6 million per year to 1.5 million per year.ĭespite the efforts of animal welfare groups, far too many animals are housed in shelters. The life of one animal adopted from the shelter is saved, as is that of the dog who will become the shelter’s new resident. It is not uncommon for them to be shipped to kill shelters that refuse to accept them. If there is an overcrowding issue at a no-kill shelter, the shelter will no longer accept new animals. Some shelters have no-kill policies, which means they do not euthanize dogs for any reason other than medical necessity. Families will have a longer wait time at the shelter, as the shelter tries to locate their owners. In general, most shelters agree to keep the dog for five days, but if that number drops to three, it becomes impossible. A puppy is the more likely to leave, whereas a senior dog is the least likely to do so. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 6.5 million animals enter shelters each year, with only 3.2 million leaving. What happens if a dog is not adopted? Because this isn’t a good article, you might want to take some tissues with you. There may be a time when the shelter is not full and the dog is good enough to keep it, but it will almost certainly be put down once the shelter is full.
